The Walk Itself
The Caminito del Rey route is 7.7 km through the Gaitanes Gorge. The full walk takes 3–4 hours at a comfortable pace. The most memorable section is the suspended boardwalk where the gorge narrows to just a few metres and the cliff walls rise vertically above and below you. Your guide will explain the geology of the Jurassic limestone and the engineering of the original pathway, built in the 1920s for workers maintaining the Guadalhorce dam.
Practical Notes
Pack at least 1.5 litres of water — no food or drink is available on the route. Closed-toe shoes with grip are mandatory at the entrance. The guide will manage the timed entry, the helmet collection, and the shuttle transfer between the North and South entrances so you do not need to organise any of this yourself.
The Costa del Sol pickup makes this tour a full day out, but for those staying between Torremolinos and Marbella it is by far the easiest way to see one of Spain’s most spectacular walking routes.

Before arriving at the trail, we stopped in a lovely little town for breakfast, which was a nice addition to the trip. The walk itself was at a comfortable pace, and if you wanted to, you were free to walk ahead of the guide. The guide was knowledgeable, sharing interesting facts about the area throughout the walk. As it was a hot day, they also encouraged everyone to stay in the shade where possible and take breaks when needed, which was really appreciated. At the end of the trail, we had a little time to buy some food and drinks before heading back to our coach. Overall, it was a really well-organised excursion and a fantastic day out. I would definitely recommend it.
