Caminito del Rey has an official minimum age: children must be 8 years old or older to enter the gorge. Under-8s are not permitted, and entrance staff enforce this. There are no exceptions.

For children aged 8 and over, the walk is manageable for most families — the path is well-maintained with handrails throughout, and the official route does not require scrambling or difficult terrain. The challenge is sustained exposure to heights, with some sections of the suspended boardwalk 100+ metres above the gorge floor. Children who are comfortable looking down from a balcony or a viewpoint generally do fine. Children with significant fear of heights may find the central boardwalk sections very stressful.
Practical Tips for Families
Helmets are provided and compulsory. Children’s helmets are available at both entrance points. Guides fit them before the group enters the gorge. Personal helmets are not permitted.
Pacing. Guided tours from Málaga typically take 3–4 hours for the full 7.7 km route. Guides are experienced with family groups and set a pace that works for children. There are no restaurants or cafés on the route; the welcome pack (packed lunch and drink) included in the guided tour makes this much easier than carrying everything yourself.
Footwear matters. Entrance staff enforce the closed-toe shoe rule for all ages. No sandals, flip-flops, or open-toe shoes — bring proper walking shoes or trainers for children.
What if a child can’t complete the route? The route is one-way with no exit mid-route other than continuing to the end. This is the most important thing to consider before bringing younger or smaller children: once you’re on the boardwalk sections, you need to keep going. Guides will support the group, but there is no turning back on the gorge face sections.
Water. Children dehydrate faster than adults. Bring at least 1 litre per child in addition to whatever the welcome pack provides.
Age 8–12
This age group typically manages the walk well with preparation. Brief them on what the walk involves — heights, narrow sections, helmets — in advance so there are no surprises on the day. First exposure to the gorge walls can feel overwhelming; children who know what to expect generally cope much better.
Teenagers
No specific concerns. The walk is well within the capability of most teenagers, and many find the gorge sections genuinely exciting rather than frightening.
