Caminito del Rey in November: Is It Worth Visiting?

Caminito del Rey is open Tuesday to Sunday in November. Weather, rain closures, opening days, €10 and €18 tickets, what to wear and how to get there from Málaga.

Updated October 2026

Caminito del Rey is open in November, normally Tuesday to Sunday, and it is a good month to walk it if you prefer cool weather to summer heat. The trade-off is rain: November is one of the two wettest months around Málaga, and heavy rain or strong wind can close the route at short notice.

The walk takes you along wooden boardwalks fixed to limestone cliffs, with the Guadalhorce River far below and a suspension bridge near the finish. In November you need to pick your day carefully, dress for changeable conditions and plan around the one-way route.

Is Caminito del Rey Worth Visiting in November?

Yes. November is one of the more appealing months for Caminito del Rey if you would like to walk in mild weather instead of intense heat. The restored route runs through the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, a landscape of steep limestone cliffs, narrow gorges, pine-covered slopes and the Guadalhorce River.

The appeal is the walking itself: sometimes along a boardwalk fixed directly to a rock face, with a vertical wall beside you and open space beneath your feet. The original walkway was built to serve the railway and the hydroelectric works in the gorge. After decades of deterioration, the modern, protected route reopened in 2015.

Five Reasons to Go in November

Cooler temperatures. Summers can be very hot inland. November is usually more comfortable for several hours outdoors on a route with little shade.

Softer light on the rock. Cloud and low autumn sunlight bring out the texture of the cliff walls. Don’t expect golden autumn woods: this is mainly a rock-and-gorge landscape.

Slightly lower demand. The operator’s visitor figures show attendance dipping a little from November to February, partly because of days lost to rain. The path still runs close to capacity, and timed tickets can sell out.

An easy fit with a Málaga city break. Museums, tapas, the historic centre and one mountain walk make a good autumn itinerary.

A manageable day trip. You can travel from Málaga, complete the route and return the same day without staying overnight in El Chorro.

When November Might Not Suit You

If you have only one possible day and a closure would ruin your plans, the weather uncertainty matters. The route also includes exposed heights and suspension bridges. Severe vertigo, limited mobility or difficulty walking several kilometres may make it unsuitable in any season.

What Is the Weather Like in November?

November is mild by northern European standards, but neither reliably warm nor reliably dry. The widely quoted figures come from Málaga Airport on the coast, not from the inland gorge.

Málaga Airport climate normalNovember
Average daily high20.1 °C
Average daily low11.3 °C
Mean temperature15.7 °C
Average monthly rainfall100 mm
Days with at least 1 mm of rain5.6
Monthly sunshine172 hours

Will the Gorge Feel Colder Than Málaga?

It can. Mountains surround Caminito del Rey, and the cliffs throw long sections into shade. A sunny stretch of the Valle del Hoyo may feel warm, while a narrow, windy walkway feels chilly. Wind is also more noticeable around the exposed bridges. Dress for several kinds of weather in the same morning.

Does It Rain a Lot in November?

November is one of the two wettest months in Málaga’s long-term record, with about 100 mm of rain on average. That still means only five or six days with at least 1 mm of rain in a typical November. Some days are bright and dry; others bring showers or heavier spells. What matters on the day is whether the operator considers the route safe, not only whether rain is in the forecast.

Rain in the forecast does not automatically mean a closure. Scattered rain may be allowed. Heavy rain, strong wind, rockfall concerns or other hazards can close the route. Check the official weather page and closure notices before you travel.

Can You Walk in the Rain?

Sometimes, if the operator keeps the route open. Take a hooded waterproof jacket: umbrellas are not allowed on the narrow walkways. Wear shoes with good grip and follow the staff’s instructions.

Early November is milder on average, but the weather on the day matters far more than the difference between the two halves of the month. A clear day in the last week can be much nicer than a windy, wet one in the first. Keep some flexibility instead of choosing dates from averages alone.

Is Caminito del Rey Open in November?

The 2026 visitor regulations provide for normal opening Tuesday to Sunday, with most Mondays closed. The operator announces a few special Monday openings each year, and weather, maintenance and other operational problems can close the route on other days.

In November 2026, Monday 2 November was one of the year’s announced Monday openings. Mondays 9, 16, 23 and 30 November are closed unless an exceptional opening is announced. Always check the official booking calendar for your date.

November Opening Hours and Entry Times

Entry begins around 9:00 a.m. The winter timetable starts at the end of October and stops admitting walkers in the early afternoon, so the summer hours do not apply in November. The booking calendar for your date shows which slots are actually on offer.

The time on your ticket is not the time to arrive at the car park. You must reach the northern control gate at least 30 minutes before your entry time, and there is a walk of 20 minutes or more to reach that gate.

What About Daylight?

In Málaga, sunset in November 2026 moves from about 6:20 p.m. at the start of the month to about 6:00 p.m. at the end. Inside the gorge, the cliffs block direct sun well before sunset. If you also need a shuttle or a train, a morning or late-morning slot leaves you the most margin.

How Long Does the Walk Take?

Allow 3–4 hours for the whole walk, which covers more than the famous boardwalks. The complete visit is about 7.7–8 km, depending on which approach you take.

Stage 1: Reach the Northern Entrance

From the area around El Kiosko, two signed footpaths lead to the entrance. The shorter tunnel path is about 1.5 km, usually 20–25 minutes. The longer path is about 2.7 km and takes 35–50 minutes. Both come before the controlled route starts.

Stage 2: Walk the Gorge

After the ticket check and a safety briefing, staff hand out the mandatory helmet. The controlled section, about 3 km long, combines boardwalks, natural paths and the Valle del Hoyo.

Stage 3: Finish Towards El Chorro

The route runs north to south and ends towards El Chorro. It is not circular: you cannot walk back along the boardwalks to a car parked at the northern end. Sort out the shuttle or your return transport before you start.

What You Will See

Gaitanejo Gorge: The narrow northern canyon, with the first rock walls, the water below and the first elevated walkways.

Valle del Hoyo: A more open valley with wider mountain views. Look up at the cliffs for birds of prey, including griffon vultures; sightings aren’t guaranteed.

Desfiladero de los Gaitanes: The southern gorge has the most dramatic cliffside boardwalks. Sunlit rock against deep shade makes for striking photographs.

Suspension bridges: The exposed bridge section is one of the highlights. In 2026 a new 110-metre suspension bridge opened as an alternative route for the final section; follow the staff’s instructions on which one is in use on the day.

If you suffer from significant vertigo, note that elevated, exposed sections are part of the normal route.

Is It Crowded in November? Do Tickets Sell Out?

It can still be busy. Timed entries cap the numbers all year, and a small seasonal dip in demand does not mean an empty trail. Weekdays outside Spanish holidays may be easier to book than popular weekends, but there is no guaranteed quiet slot.

Book as soon as tickets for your dates are released. A specific time can sell out while other dates or official guided slots are still available.

Which Ticket Should You Book in November?

ChoiceTypically includesBest forOur pick on GetYourGuide
Official general admission, €10Independent entry and the mandatory helmetVisitors with their own transport planCaminito del Rey: Entry Ticket — from $16, 4.8/5 from 5,582 reviews
Official guided admission, €18Entry and a certified guideVisitors interested in the history and wildlifeCaminito del Rey: Tickets, Guided Tour, Shuttle & Water — from $47, 4.7/5 from 9,351 reviews
Day trip with transportDepending on the tour: return coach, entry, guideVisitors without a carCaminito del Rey Guided Tour & Welcome Pack from Málaga — from $63, 4.9/5 from 19,464 reviews

The official general ticket is excellent value. The guided ticket adds explanations of the geology, the hydroelectric history and the wildlife. A full excursion from Málaga costs more mainly because it solves the transport.

You can buy official admission at Caminito del Rey tickets. Without a car, the $63 tour from Málaga includes the coach both ways, entry, an official guide and the shuttle between the two entrances. If you are staying on the Costa del Sol, the From Málaga & Costa del Sol: Caminito del Rey Guided Tour picks up along the coast, from $62 with 4.8/5 from 10,118 reviews. Check the exact date, pickup point, language, what entry is included and the cancellation terms before booking; a listing does not prove there is space on your day.

Our pick: If you have a car and mainly want the scenery, book official general admission. Without a car, compare the full train-and-shuttle cost with a tour that includes the round trip. Our Caminito del Rey tickets guide covers every ticket type in more detail, and our winter tickets page compares them for the colder months.

Getting There from Málaga in November

By Car

The drive from Málaga takes roughly an hour, depending on traffic and where you park. You can park near the northern access and take the shuttle back after the walk, or park near El Chorro, take the shuttle north before walking and finish close to your car. The official Visitors’ Reception Centre has parking listed at €2 and a shuttle connection. It is not the entrance to the boardwalks.

Aim to reach the northern access area about 75–90 minutes before your entry slot, with extra time if you need a shuttle first. This is our suggested buffer, not an official rule.

By Train and Local Shuttle

Renfe trains run to El Chorro–Caminito del Rey, near the southern exit. From there, take the local M-347 shuttle north towards El Kiosko, walk to the northern control gate, complete the one-way route and return to El Chorro for your train. Check both the outward and the return train before buying admission: not every C2 service runs beyond Álora.

The Málaga Transport Consortium publishes a winter timetable for the M-347 shuttle covering November 2026 to March 2027. The fare is €2.50; bring cash if you pay the driver, because cards aren’t accepted on board. Check Renfe for train times and fares. Our guide to getting from Málaga to Caminito del Rey sets out each option step by step.

By Organised Day Trip

For visitors without a car, this is often the simplest choice. Compare exactly what each tour includes: the meeting point in Málaga, transport both ways, entry, the guide’s language, total duration and the cancellation rules. Don’t confuse a guided walk that starts near El Kiosko with an excursion that includes transport from the city. Our guide to the trip from Málaga in winter sets the tours against the train and shuttle.

Best Time of Day to Visit

A morning or late-morning slot is the easiest choice in November. It leaves daylight to spare and takes the pressure off the journey back. The best light for photographs changes from one section of the gorge to the next, so choose the slot that fits your transport plan before chasing a perfect sun angle.

What Should You Wear?

You don’t need mountaineering gear. Wear walking or trail shoes with good grip, comfortable trousers, a breathable top, a light fleece and a waterproof, windproof jacket. On a mild day you will take layers off; in shaded or windy sections you will be glad of them. Our guide to what to wear in November and winter has the full checklist.

Bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person, small snacks such as fruit, nuts or energy bars, a charged phone, your downloaded personal ticket, identification and a small backpack. There are no toilets on the controlled route and no cafés on the boardwalks. Large backpacks, umbrellas, walking poles, selfie sticks, tripods, drones and unsuitable footwear are not allowed. Helmets are provided.

Is It Difficult, and Is It Suitable for Families?

Many visitors with reasonable walking fitness manage it, but it is not a flat promenade. Expect steps, slopes, natural paths and heights. Children must be at least eight, accompanied by an adult and able to show proof of age. Pushchairs and wheelchairs are not allowed under the current rules. If you have significant vertigo or a relevant health condition, read the official recommendations before buying tickets, and see our duration and difficulty guide.

What Happens If Bad Weather Closes the Route?

The operator can close the route for heavy rain, wind or other safety concerns. A rain forecast on its own does not entitle you to a refund; our rain and wind closures guide sets out when you can claim and the deadline. Watch the official website, the weather page and any messages about your booking.

If you bought directly from the official site, the published terms let you move the ticket to another available date or request a refund of the admission fee after an official closure, within four calendar days of the closure notice. Tour operators have their own cancellation terms, and separate transport or hotel costs are not refunded automatically. See the official closure procedure.

If you can, schedule the walk early in your Málaga stay so you have a spare day. If the route closes and the weather is poor across the region, Málaga’s museums can rescue the day.

Can You Combine Caminito del Rey with Other Places?

With a car, the Guadalhorce reservoirs, Ardales and El Chorro make pleasant stops when the weather and daylight allow. Check opening times for places to eat, particularly late in November. Heading back to Málaga for tapas after the walk is an easier combination than trying to fit in Ronda on the same short day; our day trips from Málaga guide covers Ronda as a day of its own.

November FAQ

Is Caminito del Rey open all of November?

Normally Tuesday to Sunday, subject to the official booking calendar and any closures. Most Mondays are closed.

Is November a good month to visit?

Yes, for comfortable walking temperatures, as long as you allow for the chance of rain or wind.

How cold is it?

Málaga Airport’s average November high is 20.1 °C, but shaded and exposed sections of the gorge can feel much cooler.

Can you go if it rains?

Sometimes. Light or scattered rain may be allowed; the operator makes the safety decision.

Will it be less crowded?

Demand can ease slightly, but timed entries still sell out. Book ahead.

Do you need hiking boots?

Not necessarily. Shoes with good grip matter more than heavy boots.

Is a guide compulsory?

No. Official €10 general admission is self-guided; the €18 guided ticket is optional.

Can you get there by train?

Yes, to El Chorro, then the shuttle north to the entrance area. Check the return train before booking.

Are there toilets or restaurants on the trail?

There are no toilets or cafés along the controlled walkways. Use the facilities before you start.

Can children visit?

Only children aged eight and over, accompanied by an adult, with suitable identification.

What happens if it closes?

If you bought directly from the official site, you can follow the published exchange or refund procedure. Tour operators follow their own terms.

Should You Book Caminito del Rey in November?

Yes, if the weather cooperates. The cooler air makes the walk more comfortable than in summer, and the limestone walls, narrow boardwalks and suspension bridges are just as dramatic without the heat. Choose an early slot, arrange transport for the one-way walk, pack layers and keep a spare day if you can.

If you have a car, official €10 admission is excellent value. If you are based in Málaga without one, an excursion with pickup, entry and a guide saves you the train-and-shuttle planning. For how November compares with the rest of the year, see our best time to visit Caminito del Rey guide.
