Despite its reputation, today’s Caminito del Rey is not an extreme mountain hike. The historic pathway was extensively restored before reopening to visitors, and the famous cliff sections now have maintained wooden walkways, safety barriers and controlled access.

How Long Is the Caminito del Rey Hike?
For most visitors, expect to spend around three to four hours walking the complete route.

Where Does Caminito del Rey Start?
The Caminito del Rey starts on the northern side, near the reservoirs in Ardales.
You cannot simply drive to the walkway entrance, park beside it and begin walking. You first need to reach the northern access area and then walk to the official control point.
There are two principal approaches:
- a shorter access route of roughly 1.5 km
- a longer access route of roughly 2.7 km

The Caminito del Rey Route, Step by Step
1. Northern Access Walk
From the area around El Kiosko and the Conde de Guadalhorce reservoir, follow one of the access routes towards the reception point.
This section is ordinary walking rather than exposed cliffside boardwalk.
2. Entrance and Control Cabin
At the reception area, your ticket is validated and visitors are organised according to their allocated entry.
This is also where you receive the protective helmet used during the route.
3. Desfiladero de Gaitanejo
The first gorge introduces the scenery that makes the Caminito so distinctive.
Rock walls close in around the route and the first elevated sections appear.
4. Tajo de las Palomas
The route continues through another narrow gorge and past infrastructure connected with the area’s hydroelectric history.
5. Valle del Hoyo
The landscape opens dramatically.
This greener middle section gives you a break from the most exposed boardwalks and shows that the route is more varied than the famous photos suggest.
6. Desfiladero de los Gaitanes
For many visitors, this is the highlight.
The pathway once again clings to the cliff, with enormous rock walls and dramatic views through the gorge.
7. The Suspension Bridge
Near the end comes one of the most exciting sections: the suspension bridge crossing the gorge.
If heights make you nervous, focus ahead and keep walking rather than stopping in the middle.
8. Final Walk to El Chorro
Crossing the suspension bridge does not mean you have finished walking.
After leaving the controlled section, the route continues downhill towards the southern exit and El Chorro.
Is Caminito del Rey a Difficult Hike?
The Caminito del Rey is better described as a long scenic walk with exposed sections than a technically difficult hike.
You do not need climbing skills and there is no scrambling over rocks.
The main challenges are:

You walk north to south only.
You cannot reach the end and simply turn around to walk back to your starting point.
