Caminito del Rey from Málaga in Winter: Best Day Trips Without a Car

Visit Caminito del Rey from Málaga without a car between November and March. Guided day trips compared with the train to El Chorro, the M-347 winter shuttle, costs and timing.

Updated October 2026

You can visit Caminito del Rey from Málaga without a hire car, and it makes one of the best day trips in Andalucía. The cliffside route is roughly an hour’s drive away, and you reach it either on an organised excursion or by pairing a train to El Chorro with the local shuttle bus.

The walk takes you along wooden boardwalks fixed to limestone cliffs, above a river in a deep gorge, and across bridges that show the scale of the mountains. One detail catches first-timers out: the train station is near the end of the one-way walk, not the entrance. If you travel independently, you first take a shuttle to the northern side.

From November to February the days are shorter and weather closures are possible, so timing matters. Below, you can pick the way of getting there that suits you, without paying more than you need or missing a connection.

Is a winter day trip worth it?

Yes. The Gaitanes Gorge is impressive in any season and does not need summer sun. Winter walking temperatures are usually more comfortable than in July and August, and the low sun throws long shadows across the cliffs.

The managed route starts near Ardales, passes through the Gaitanejo Gorge and the open Valle del Hoyo, then enters the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes towards El Chorro. The 110-metre suspension bridge that opened in June 2026 is now part of the route, under the operator’s access arrangements.

The two drawbacks in winter are the chance of a closure for heavy rain or strong wind, and less daylight. Treat the trip as most of your day, not a 90-minute stop, and plan the journey back before you book dinner or anything else timed in Málaga.

Option 1: a transport-inclusive guided tour from Málaga

A full excursion usually includes a meeting point in the city, a coach or minibus to the gorge, timed admission, a guide and the ride back to Málaga. You do not have to coordinate a rural train and a local bus. On a two- or three-day holiday, that can be worth the extra cost.

Example: Málaga city excursion with transport

The From Málaga: Caminito del Rey Day Trip & Guided Tour (from $69, 4.8/5 from 6,228 reviews) is a day trip with multilingual guides and transport from the city. Lunch is not normally included on these trips.

A departure from central Málaga does not always mean collection from your hotel. Check the meeting point, where you are dropped off, the guide’s language, whether admission is included and that your winter date runs.

Example: guided excursion with Málaga transport

The Caminito del Rey Guided Tour & Welcome Pack from Málaga (from $63, 4.9/5 from 19,464 reviews) is a full day of about 8–9 hours including travel, with the coach both ways, entry and an official guide. It has offered free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead, but check separately what happens if the attraction closes on the day. Our breakdown of the $63 tour goes through what is included.

What to verify before booking any organised excursion

  • Pickup: central Málaga, a set stop or your hotel?
  • Admission: is Caminito del Rey entry included, or only the transport?
  • Return: does the trip end where it started?
  • Guide language: have you selected English?
  • Duration: does it add village or shopping stops?
  • Cancellation: what happens if you cancel, and separately if the attraction closes for weather?

Our verdict: without a car and with limited time, a direct excursion with clear inclusions is the easiest choice. Between the two above, take the $63 tour if you want the longest review record, or the $69 day trip if its date or guide language suits you better.

Option 2: how to get to Caminito del Rey by train

Going independently works, but the geography matters. El Chorro–Caminito del Rey station is about 2 km below the southern exit of the one-way walk. Entry is controlled at the northern end, near Ardales.

Your journey in six steps

  1. Leave from Málaga-María Zambrano on a suitable Renfe train.
  2. Get off at El Chorro–Caminito del Rey.
  3. Take the M-347 shuttle to El Kiosko, near the northern access.
  4. Walk one of the signed paths to the northern control gate.
  5. Walk Caminito del Rey north to south.
  6. Leave through the southern exit and walk down to El Chorro station for your train back to Málaga.

Choose the correct train

Check Málaga-María Zambrano to El Chorro–Caminito del Rey on Renfe for your date. Direct trains take around 50–60 minutes, but stopping patterns vary.

Renfe lists up to five trains a day from Málaga to El Chorro on weekdays and six back, combining Media Distancia trains with two C2 Cercanías round trips that run on beyond Álora. Not every C2 train continues past Álora, and a train that ends there will not get you to El Chorro. Weekends and holidays can run fewer or different trains. Our full DIY train guide works through each connection.

Look at the outward and return trains before you buy a non-refundable ticket for the walk. A good morning train is little use without a sensible train back.

At El Chorro: catch the M-347

The shuttle leaves from near the station and runs to the northern side at El Kiosko, stopping at other visitor points on the way. The visitor day fare is €2.50. You can add it on the official booking site where offered or pay the driver; bring cash for the driver, because cards are not accepted.

The Málaga transport consortium’s timetable for 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027 runs Tuesday to Sunday and on holidays, not on Mondays. First departures from El Chorro are at 07:40, 08:40 and 09:30, then every half hour until 18:00. The 09:30 bus reaches El Kiosko around 10:00. Holidays and closure days can change the service.

Check the M-347 timetable before you go. The attraction’s FAQ gives a shorter ride of about 15–20 minutes; for planning a connection, go by the timetable’s stop-by-stop times.

Walk from El Kiosko to the controlled gate

The bus does not stop at the start of the boardwalks. The shorter signed path is about 1.5 km, around 20–25 minutes, through a pedestrian tunnel. The longer one is about 2.7 km and takes 35–50 minutes.

You must reach the northern gate 30 minutes before your entry time. A bus reaching El Kiosko at 10:00 can therefore suit an 11:30 entry on the shorter path with a buffer, provided a train gets you to El Chorro in time for that bus.

Return from El Chorro

After the gorge, follow the exit path down to El Chorro station. You do not need another shuttle if you are going back to Málaga by train. The station is not at the end of the boardwalks, though: the exit path adds about 2 km of walking.

Do not book a train that only works if you finish in the shortest estimated time. Aim to reach the platform with a comfortable buffer, at least 30–45 minutes beyond a cautious estimate where you can.

The cost of a DIY visit

ComponentCost
Official general admission€10
M-347 shuttle€2.50
Subtotal without the train€12.50
Upgrade to official guided admissionAdd €8
Return Renfe ticketsCheck the price for your train and date

As an illustration only, a €12 return train fare would bring the general-plus-shuttle total to €24.50. That is not a quoted Renfe price. Check the real fare and compare it with the full price of a tour.

An example winter timing plan

Say you have found an 11:30 entry slot. Work backwards:

StepApproximate time
Outward trainOne that reaches El Chorro before the shuttle
Shuttle from El Chorro09:30
Shuttle reaches El KioskoAround 10:00
Short path to the gateAllow 20–25 minutes or more
Arrive at the northern gateBy 11:00
Booked entry11:30
Gorge, exit and walk to the stationAbout 3–4 hours in total, with margin
Return trainOne leaving well after your estimated arrival at the station

This is not a confirmed rail itinerary. The 09:30 shuttle is on the published winter timetable; check that a train reaches El Chorro in time for it. If none does, choose another shuttle and entry time, or take a guided excursion.

Which winter entry time is easiest?

A morning or late-morning entry usually leaves more daylight and more choice of trains home. Days are short from November to February, shortest around the December solstice. An afternoon entry can work on a coach excursion but gets difficult when you depend on trains.

The rock walls shade parts of the gorge at different times of day, so do not plan around one photo moment. A reliable train and entry connection matters more.

Weather, closures and refund planning

In winter Caminito del Rey normally opens Tuesday to Sunday, is closed on most Mondays and always closes on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January. Heavy rain, strong wind, maintenance or other unsafe conditions can also close it.

Light or scattered rain may be allowed; management decides on the day. Check the official weather and status page and your booking messages the evening before and the morning of your trip. Our guide to rain and wind closures explains the signs to watch, and our page on what to do if it closes has backup plans in Málaga.

If you bought admission directly and the operator announces a closure, you can normally ask for another available date or a refund of the admission fee within four calendar days of the notice. Renfe tickets follow their own terms, and a tour’s refund or rebooking depends on the tour company’s conditions. Our winter tickets guide sets out each option.

A tour is easier to organise when the weather is uncertain, but it does not get you in when the route is unsafe.

How to dress for a winter day trip

Wear supportive hiking or trail shoes, comfortable walking trousers, a breathable base layer, a fleece and a hooded, windproof waterproof jacket. The coast can be milder than the inland gorge, especially in the shade or in gusts.

Carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person, small snacks, a phone with your tickets downloaded and a small daypack. There are no toilets or cafés along the controlled walkway. Helmets are provided. Umbrellas, large backpacks, walking poles, selfie sticks and similar items are not allowed. Do not turn up for a morning coach pickup in beach shoes.

Is the day trip suitable for children or older visitors?

Children must be at least eight, with an adult, and able to manage the route. It involves several kilometres of walking, steps, slopes and exposed boardwalks. Pushchairs, wheelchairs and some walking aids are not allowed; if you have strong vertigo or limited mobility, read the official guidance before buying.

Organised transport makes the day easier for a family, but the walk is the same. Some tour companies also set stricter age limits than the attraction, so check your chosen listing.

Cruise passengers, airport arrivals and Costa del Sol visitors

Cruise passengers: a visit can work if your ship is in port long enough, but avoid an excursion that gets back close to all-aboard time. A trip with transport included is usually safer than several train connections.

Airport arrivals: unless you have a very generous buffer, do not book a timed entry straight after a flight. Delays and baggage collection can easily make you miss it.

Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola: some tours pick up in these Costa del Sol resorts, so you may not need to go into Málaga first; the $62 tour from Málaga and the Costa del Sol (4.8/5 from 10,118 reviews) is one. By train, the C1 line takes you into Málaga to change, but not every C2 train goes on to El Chorro.

Can you combine the walk with another stop?

The walk plus the travel fills most of a day. Some organised tours add a stop in the village of Álora or a drink in Ardales, which makes for a longer day than a direct excursion. By public transport, do not try to add the Guadalhorce reservoirs or Ronda without checking onward and return connections.

Dinner in Málaga afterwards is the easier combination.

Common planning mistakes

  1. Thinking the station is at the entrance. El Chorro is near the southern exit; take the shuttle north first.
  2. Taking a train that ends in Álora. Check that your train goes on to El Chorro.
  3. Forgetting the walk to the gate. The M-347 does not drop you at the control gate.
  4. Buying admission before checking the train back. Work backwards from a realistic time for the whole walk.
  5. Booking a local guided walk instead of a Málaga tour. A walk that meets at El Kiosko may have no transfer from the city.
  6. Assuming “pickup included” means your hotel. It may mean a central meeting point.
  7. Using summer times in winter. Read the date-specific bus, train and entry schedules.

Direct trains usually take around 50–60 minutes; check the train you choose.

Which station should I use?

Search for Málaga-María Zambrano to El Chorro–Caminito del Rey.

Can I walk from El Chorro to the north entrance?

It is not the recommended way to reach the start. Take the local shuttle.

€2.50 for a day ticket; bring cash if you pay the driver.

How long is a complete tour?

Often 6–9 hours from Málaga, longer with pickups along the Costa del Sol.

Does a tour include admission?

Many do, but check the listing you choose.

Do tours meet at the hotel?

Not always. Central Málaga meeting points are common.

What if the train is delayed?

You may miss your entry, and official admission is not refunded for a transport delay.

Can children visit?

Yes, from age eight, subject to the attraction’s rules and any stricter tour rules.

Is it open in January?

Normally on opening days, weather permitting; 1 January is always closed.

Final verdict: train or guided tour?

Take the train if you enjoy travelling independently and can confirm comfortable outward, shuttle and return connections. Book an excursion from Málaga if those connections look awkward or you would rather not deal with them. Either way, give Caminito del Rey a full day. Arrive early at the northern gate, pack for winter weather and leave enough daylight for the journey back.
