Caminito del Rey from the Costa del Sol in Winter: Resort Pickups, Tours and Trains

Visit Caminito del Rey from Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola or Marbella between November and February. Resort pickups, guided tours, the C1 train and driving compared.

Updated October 2026

You don’t have to stay in Málaga city to visit Caminito del Rey. If your winter holiday is in Torremolinos, Benalmádena or Fuengirola, guided excursions pick up along the coast, so you can skip the trip into Málaga. From Marbella and Estepona there are fewer departures, and you need to check the pickup list before you book.

The walk is a good reason to leave the beach for a day. Inland, wooden paths cling to limestone cliffs, the Guadalhorce River winds through a deep gorge, and suspension bridges give you views that photographs rarely capture. From November to February the long walk is more comfortable in the cooler weather than in summer.

The hard part is choosing the right departure. Some tours use resort meeting points instead of hotel pickup, the western resorts are not on every pickup list, and a product called “Caminito del Rey guided tour” may meet at the walkway itself, with no transport from the coast. The sections below compare the options resort by resort.

Caminito del Rey opens Tuesday to Sunday through the winter, weather permitting. Official admission costs €10 general or €18 guided; a full resort excursion adds the coach, guide and pickup, so it costs more. The walk itself is about 7.7 km and takes 3–4 hours, plus the drive inland.

Our recommendation: look for a confirmed departure from the resort you are actually staying in. Travel into Málaga to join a tour only if nothing local works for your date or budget.

More ways to explore Caminito del Rey, the Gaitanes Gorge, and the best day trips from Málaga — all bookable with free cancellation.

Is Caminito del Rey worth a winter trip from the coast?

Yes. It is one of the most memorable outdoor days within reach of the Costa del Sol. You leave the seafront promenades and travel inland to the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, a mountain gorge with narrow elevated walkways and the river far below.

The original path was built for the hydroelectric works of the early twentieth century; the restored visitor route reopened in 2015. You walk through the Gaitanejo Gorge, the wider Valle del Hoyo and the southern Gaitanes Gorge with its suspension bridge sections. A 110-metre bridge was added in June 2026 as an alternative final section, used as the operator directs on the day.

Winter means comfortable walking temperatures and soft light, but also the risk of a wind or rain closure. The weather in the gorge can differ from what you see at your hotel on the coast. If you can, don’t book the excursion for the last day of a short holiday.

From Torremolinos: perhaps the simplest resort option

Torremolinos is on the pickup list of the main Costa del Sol excursions, including the From Málaga & Costa del Sol: Caminito del Rey Guided Tour (from $62, 4.8/5 from 10,118 reviews). Pickup points such as the town centre and the area around Plaza del Lido are not interchangeable, and they may be a walk from a hotel in La Carihuela or along the beach.

Hotel pickup or central meeting point?

“From Torremolinos” doesn’t always mean the guide collects you from hotel reception. Some operators use designated bus stops or central squares, and your booking confirmation says where to wait.

The $62 Costa del Sol tour takes about 10–11 hours door to door, longer than a Málaga city pickup because the coach collects along the coast. That is still simpler than coordinating two trains and the mountain shuttle on your own. Our breakdown of the Costa del Sol tour covers what it includes.

DIY alternative

The C1 commuter train runs from Torremolinos to Málaga. There you change to a train for El Chorro–Caminito del Rey, take the shuttle north to El Kiosko, walk to the entrance and do the one-way route. It works, but on a short winter trip a resort excursion is often more practical. Our guide to the Málaga to Caminito del Rey train in winter goes through each connection.

Our verdict: try a confirmed Torremolinos pickup before adding the journey into Málaga.

From Benalmádena: check which part of town you’re staying in

Benalmádena is spread over Benalmádena Costa, Puerto Marina and Arroyo de la Miel. A departure “from Benalmádena” may be near the marina or another designated stop, not necessarily your hotel.

If you stay by Puerto Marina, a nearby meeting point is very convenient. From Arroyo de la Miel, check whether the nearest advertised pickup needs a local taxi or bus.

By public transport

The C1 line stops at Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel and runs to Málaga, where you need a train that continues to El Chorro. After that comes the M-347 shuttle north. You can do it, but several separate stages have to fit your admission slot.

When a guided tour is worth the cost

A resort tour takes care of the shuttle timing, so you can concentrate on the walk. Before you book, check the exact meeting point, the return drop-off, whether admission is included, the guide’s language and the weather-cancellation policy.

Our verdict: without a car, a Benalmádena pickup is usually the easier choice; the train suits travellers who are happy to manage connections.

From Fuengirola: useful pickups on the main tours

Fuengirola is on the pickup lists of the main Costa del Sol excursions, so you rarely need to travel east to join a tour.

Example: a Costa del Sol tour with Fuengirola pickup

The $62 Costa del Sol tour picks up in Fuengirola as well as Torremolinos and Benalmádena. From Fuengirola or further west, expect the full 10–11 hours door to door, because you are among the first collected and the last dropped off.

That is a long day on a coach for a 3–4 hour walk. If you can easily reach Málaga, a city departure is shorter: the Caminito del Rey Guided Tour & Welcome Pack from Málaga (from $63, 4.9/5 from 19,464 reviews) runs about 8–9 hours including travel.

Other operators

The From Málaga and Costa del Sol: Caminito del Rey Excursion (from $61, 4.5/5 from 360 reviews) is a second resort-pickup option with far fewer reviews than the $62 tour. Check the option you select carefully: on several listings one option includes the coach from the coast and another is a tour-only start at the walkway.

If you’re in Mijas Costa

A Fuengirola pickup point is often more convenient than one in Málaga, but only after you count the journey from your accommodation. Check whether you can reach an early pickup by bus; a taxi may be needed.

Our verdict: start with the Fuengirola pickup on the $62 tour, then compare date, length and total price with a Málaga departure.

From Marbella: fewer choices, but still possible

Marbella has no station on the C1 coastal line and is not on every multi-resort pickup list. Our breakdown of the Costa del Sol tour lists Marbella among its pickup towns, but the points vary by date, so confirm yours on the listing before paying.

Example: shared Marbella and Costa del Sol excursion

The $62 Costa del Sol tour includes the coach, the guide and admission, and runs about 10–11 hours from the western resorts. Any pickup supplement shows at checkout on the option you choose, so compare the final total, not the headline price.

What does Marbella pickup actually mean?

It may be a designated hotel or coach stop away from your own accommodation. Marbella stretches a long way along the coast; Puerto Banús, central Marbella and San Pedro Alcántara are not interchangeable. Confirm the exact location, pickup time and return point before you pay.

Private Marbella excursion

We found no private Caminito del Rey tour from Marbella on GetYourGuide. A group can book a private transfer locally and buy official admission at €10 or €18 each; the walkway itself stays shared with every other visitor admitted in your slot. Read the transfer company’s terms for a same-day weather closure before you pay.

Drive from Marbella

With a rental car, driving is often the best value. Marbella’s tourism office describes an inland route via Ojén and Coín on the A-355, then Cártama and the A-357 towards Ardales. Allow around 1½ hours in good conditions, depending on where you start, parking and traffic. General admission is €10 per person, plus the shuttle or parking.

Public transport from Marbella

You would first need a bus to Málaga or Fuengirola, then the train to El Chorro and the shuttle north. In winter that makes a long, awkward day; we prefer a confirmed Marbella pickup or driving yourself.

Our verdict: confirm the pickup point and the final price carefully. For couples or families with a car, official admission is usually much better value.

What about La Cala de Mijas, Calahonda and Estepona?

From La Cala de Mijas, the practical starting point may be Fuengirola if your tour has no nearer stop. From Calahonda, compare the Fuengirola and Marbella pickups against your actual address and the local taxi or bus time.

Estepona rarely appears on pickup lists, and a product that says “Costa del Sol pickups” doesn’t prove it serves Estepona on your winter date. A rental car or a private transfer to a pickup further east often suits groups better than a very early taxi.

The nearest resort is not always the nearest tour meeting point. Count the full door-to-door time; the distance on a map can mislead.

The prices and ratings were read in October 2026; they are not a promise of departures on a particular November, December, January or February date. Compare the live calendar and the inclusions of the option you select, not just the titles.

What’s included—and why do prices vary so much?

A full excursion costs more than the official €10 entry because it adds the coach, driver, guide, admission, shuttle coordination and sometimes extra stops. Official guided admission is €18 and the local shuttle €2.50.

For a solo traveller with no car, the coach makes sense. For two adults with a car, buying admission independently is usually much cheaper. For a family, multiply the per-person tour price before assuming a shared excursion is better value. A private transfer can cost less per head for a larger group, but the age and fitness rules at the walkway stay the same.

Hotel pickup versus meeting point

You will usually meet one of three arrangements:

  1. Fixed central meeting point: you make your own way to a named street, station area or bus stop.
  2. Choice of designated stops: you pick one of several pickup points in your resort.
  3. Selected-hotel pickup: some hotels are served; guests at others walk to an agreed stop nearby.

Check the final booking voucher. A pickup town on the listing is not a promise of your hotel’s doorstep, especially in the spread-out coastal resorts.

How long will the day take?

A typical tour starts with a morning pickup at your resort, collects other passengers, drives inland towards Ardales, then gives you the admission and safety check, about 3–4 hours on the walk, and the drive back from the El Chorro end. Some itineraries add a refreshment stop or a village visit.

A 10–11 hour coach day doesn’t mean ten hours of hiking. Much of it is transport and waiting, and the walkway is the same length on every tour. Decide whether that suits you before you book.

Could you visit independently without a car?

From Torremolinos, Benalmádena or Fuengirola, the C1 train takes you towards Málaga. There, choose a train that actually reaches El Chorro–Caminito del Rey; some C2 trains end at Álora, not El Chorro. At El Chorro, take the M-347 north towards El Kiosko and walk the final approach.

Caminito del Rey starts in the north and ends near El Chorro, so the walk brings you back towards the station. That is efficient when every connection works, but a late or missed train can cost you a timed admission. The winter shuttle fare is €2.50, and its 2026–27 timetable runs from 1 November to 31 March. Check both train directions for your actual day before you book; our winter train guide sets out the timings.

From Marbella and Estepona, the extra bus to reach the railway makes DIY travel harder. Unless you enjoy planning rural public transport, a confirmed resort tour or a rental car is often easier.

Winter opening, weather and closure terms

The walkway opens Tuesday to Sunday; Mondays are usually closed, as are 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January. A tour company may not run on every open date, so check its live calendar.

The gorge can be colder than the coast, with heavy rain or strong wind. The operator closes the route when conditions are unsafe, while light scattered rain often does not stop visits. Keep a spare day if you can. Our guide to rain and wind closures explains how to check the status.

Official tickets cannot be returned because your plans change. When the operator closes the walkway, buyers of direct official tickets can choose another available date or a refund of the admission fee, within four calendar days of the closure notice. A tour’s own cancellation window is a separate matter from how it handles a same-day closure. Free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead doesn’t tell you whether a coach trip already under way will be refunded.

What to wear and who can visit

Wear walking or trail shoes with good grip, trousers, a fleece and a waterproof, windproof outer layer. Carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person, snacks, your downloaded ticket and a small daypack. There are no toilets or cafés on the controlled trail. Umbrellas, large backpacks, walking poles and selfie sticks are not allowed; helmets are handed out at the gate. Our what to wear guide has the full checklist.

The minimum age is eight, and under-18s need an accompanying adult. The route is not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs and may not suit people with strong vertigo or limited mobility. A guided coach tour does not change those rules.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every “Costa del Sol” excursion picks up in Marbella.
  • Mistaking a resort meeting point for hotel pickup.
  • Booking a tour-only option at the walkway when you needed transport.
  • Missing a pickup supplement for the western resorts at checkout.
  • Underestimating a 10–11 hour coach day.
  • Assuming every tour departs daily in winter.
  • Not comparing same-day weather-closure terms.

Costa del Sol FAQ

Can you visit from Torremolinos?

Yes. The main Costa del Sol excursions, including the $62 tour, pick up in Torremolinos.

What about Benalmádena?

Yes. Check exactly where the Benalmádena pickup is, especially whether you are near Puerto Marina or Arroyo de la Miel.

Is there a Fuengirola departure?

Yes. Fuengirola is on the pickup list of the main Costa del Sol tours; expect a day of 10–11 hours.

Are there Marbella departures?

Yes, on some tours. Confirm Marbella on the pickup list for your date and check the final price at checkout.

Can I visit from Estepona?

Estepona rarely appears on pickup lists. Driving, or a transfer to a pickup further east, is usually simpler.

Is pickup always at my hotel?

No. Many tours use designated meeting points.

Do tours include admission?

The full excursions usually do, but the option you select must say so.

How long is the tour?

About 8–9 hours from Málaga and 10–11 hours from the resorts, depending on pickup order.

Is there a direct Fuengirola–El Chorro train?

No. Take the C1 to Málaga and change there for a train that continues to El Chorro.

Can children come?

Yes, from age eight, if they meet the walkway’s rules and the tour’s own conditions.

Are excursions guaranteed in winter?

No. Confirm your exact date and allow for a weather cancellation.

Is a private tour more flexible?

A private transfer gives you more control over timing, but its cancellation terms can be stricter. Read them before you pay.

Final verdict

Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola have practical pickups, while Marbella needs a closer check of the pickup list and final price. Choose the confirmed meeting point closest to your accommodation, work out the full price and read the tour’s weather policy. If you already have a car, the €10 official ticket is hard to beat. The gorge is the same however you get there.
