Caminito del Rey at Christmas and New Year 2026–2027: Opening Days, Tickets & Visiting Tips
Caminito del Rey is open over Christmas except 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January. See each date from 22 December to 6 January, tickets, weather and day trips from Málaga.
You can walk Caminito del Rey over the Christmas holidays, but not on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day. On the other operating days it makes a good outdoor day out from Málaga, even in midwinter.
You swap the lit-up streets of Málaga for a narrow wooden path fixed along a limestone gorge, with the Guadalhorce River far below. The air is cooler than in summer, and there is a suspension bridge near the end. For winter 2026–27 there is also the new 110-metre bridge, opened in June 2026, which gives returning visitors a reason to go again.
Plan for fewer operating days around the holidays, short daylight, busy ticket slots and possible wind or rain closures. If your dates are already fixed, start with the calendar below, then the tickets, transport and a sample day trip.

Our recommendation: choose a date early in your holiday, book admission in advance and keep a second day free. Without a car, an organised excursion from Málaga such as the Caminito del Rey Guided Tour & Welcome Pack from Málaga (from $63, 4.9/5 from 19,464 reviews) is usually the easiest option. With a rental car, the €10 official general admission is very good value.
Is Caminito del Rey open at Christmas 2026?
The operator’s FAQ lists four fixed closures every year: 24 December, 25 December, 31 December and 1 January. Mondays are also closed unless the operator announces a special opening. Every other day can be booked, subject to the calendar and safe conditions. If the weather closes the route on your date, our guide to what to do when Caminito del Rey is closed has indoor backups in Málaga.
December 2026–January 2027 planning calendar
| Date | Day | Normal status |
|---|---|---|
| 22 December 2026 | Tuesday | Normally open |
| 23 December | Wednesday | Normally open |
| 24 December | Thursday | Closed: Christmas Eve |
| 25 December | Friday | Closed: Christmas Day |
| 26 December | Saturday | Normally open |
| 27 December | Sunday | Normally open |
| 28 December | Monday | Normally closed; special opening possible |
| 29 December | Tuesday | Normally open |

| 31 December | Thursday | Closed: New Year’s Eve |
| 1 January 2027 | Friday | Closed: New Year’s Day |

| 3 January | Sunday | Normally open |
| 4 January | Monday | Normally closed; special opening possible |
| 5 January | Tuesday | Normally open |
| 6 January | Wednesday | Normally open, subject to the calendar |
“Normally open” follows the published weekly and holiday rules. It does not guarantee a free slot or that the walk runs that day, so check the official reservation calendar.
What about Monday 28 December and 4 January?
Both are Mondays. Most Mondays are closed, although the operator sometimes announces special openings. Plan on a Monday only once the official calendar shows a slot you can book.
Is it open on Three Kings’ Day?
6 January is a major Spanish holiday, but it is not one of the four annual closures. In 2027 it falls on a Wednesday. Check ticket availability, trains and buses, and opening hours of places you want to eat for that exact date.
Is it worth visiting over Christmas?
Yes. You come for the gorge, not for beach weather: huge limestone cliffs, boardwalks fixed high on the rock, pines and green water below. The low winter sun picks out the texture of the rock, and the cool air makes several kilometres of walking easier than in the heat of an inland Andalusian summer.
It also pairs well with Christmas in Málaga. You can hike in the mountains by day and walk under the city’s lights in the evening.
The downsides are real. There are fewer operating dates, the weather can turn, and you have a short window of daylight. The Christmas period is not automatically quiet either, because holidaymakers crowd onto the days that remain.
Best fit: travellers staying several nights in Málaga who can choose between at least two possible walking dates.
What’s new for Christmas 2026?
A 110-metre suspension bridge opened near the southern end in June 2026. It works as an alternative final section, avoids part of the older, steeper descent and gives you a new view of the cliffs. The bridge is about 1.2 metres wide with a long drop beneath it, and staff decide when it is in use.
If you walked Caminito del Rey before the bridge opened, it is a good reason to come back. You do not need a special “bridge ticket”: the bridge is part of the route, not a separate admission category.
For photos, the most striking shots show the whole bridge in its landscape: tiny figures crossing against the huge limestone walls.
Christmas 2026–27 ticket availability
Tickets for 7 December 2026 to 2 May 2027 went on sale on 23 September 2026, about 190,000 of them, according to Cadena SER. The operator releases tickets in large batches, so the whole Christmas period is already on sale. Popular dates go first.
Check the official ticket booking for your exact date and entry time. Christmas weekends can sell out. When general admission is gone, official guided admission or a tour operator may still have places, so compare each option that is actually bookable for your date.
Ticket choices
| Choice | Official price or structure | Who it suits | Our pick on GetYourGuide |
|---|---|---|---|
| General admission | €10 | Visitors who organise their own journey | Caminito del Rey: Entry Ticket, from $16, 4.8/5 from 5,582 reviews |
| Guided admission | €18 | Visitors who want commentary on the history, nature and engineering | Caminito del Rey: Tickets, Guided Tour, Shuttle & Water, from $47, 4.7/5 from 9,351 reviews |
| Tour with transport | Operator price varies | Visitors without a car in Málaga or on the Costa del Sol | Caminito del Rey Guided Tour & Welcome Pack from Málaga, from $63, 4.9/5 from 19,464 reviews |
Official guided admission costs €8 more than general admission. Both get you onto the same walk; the extra pays for a certified guide. Neither includes travel from Málaga.
For a full day out without a car, the $63 guided tour from Málaga includes the return coach, entry and a guide. If you are staying further along the coast, the From Málaga & Costa del Sol: Caminito del Rey Guided Tour (from $62, 4.8/5 from 10,118 reviews) picks up from Costa del Sol towns as well. Before you book, check that your date has a departure, plus the meeting point, language, inclusions and refund terms.
What if official tickets are sold out?
Check nearby dates and other official entry times first, then the guided category. Tour operators may hold their own allocations, but a listing on a website does not prove your date is bookable. Avoid informal resale and websites that pretend to be the official seller. Our winter tickets guide goes through each fallback in order.
December weather: what should you expect?
December on the Málaga coast is mild compared with northern Europe, but wetter and less predictable than summer. AEMET’s Málaga Airport normals show:
| Measure | December normal |
|---|---|
| Average daytime high | 17.5 °C |
| Average night-time low | 8.9 °C |
| Mean temperature | 13.2 °C |
| Monthly rainfall | 100 mm |
| Days with at least 1 mm of rain | 6.6 |
| Monthly sunshine | 160 hours |
AEMET Málaga Airport normals (1981–2010). They are long-term averages at the coast, not a forecast for Christmas 2026 or a measurement in the gorge.
Caminito del Rey is inland and can feel colder where the cliffs shade the path or the wind funnels through the gorge. Bring a light fleece, a waterproof and windproof jacket, and comfortable walking shoes with good grip. Snow is not typical on the route, so do not expect a white Christmas hike.
Does rain close the attraction?
Not automatically. The walk can go ahead in scattered rain, while heavy rain, strong wind or other hazards can lead to an official closure. A sunny forecast for Málaga city does not tell you what the gorge will be like. Check the official weather page and the operator’s messages both the evening before and the morning of your trip. Our rain and wind closures guide explains what happens to your ticket.
Christmas daylight and best entry time
Around the solstice, Málaga has about 9 hours 39 minutes of daylight. The sun sets a little after 6 p.m. in late December, but the cliffs put parts of the path in shade much earlier. A morning or late-morning slot leaves you time to walk and get back to Málaga in daylight.
The official website gives entry from 9:00 a.m., with the last entry time depending on the season. Look at the slots offered for your date instead of guessing an afternoon time.
Allow about 3–4 hours for the whole walk, including access and exit. Do not combine a late entry with a tight return train and a timed evening event in Málaga.
Getting to the entrance: avoid the timing mistake
The route runs one way, from the north near Ardales to the south near El Chorro. You reach the control gate on foot; it is not next to a car park or shuttle stop. The shortest approach, from near El Kiosko, is about 1.5 km, or 20–25 minutes, and a longer alternative is 2.7 km.
You must be at the northern control point at least 30 minutes before your ticket time. For a 10:30 a.m. ticket, be there by 10:00 a.m., which means reaching the El Kiosko area earlier still.
Driving from Málaga
The drive usually takes around an hour, depending on traffic and where you park. Either park near the northern access and take the shuttle back after the walk, or park on the El Chorro side, take the shuttle north first and finish near your car. The official Visitors’ Reception Centre lists parking at €2 a day; it is not the control gate.
Travelling by train
Renfe trains run from Málaga to El Chorro–Caminito del Rey, near the southern end. From there you take the M-347 shuttle north and then walk the approach path. Before you buy admission, check the return train as well as the outbound one, because holiday and weekend timetables can differ.
The shuttle day fare is €2.50. Bring cash if you pay the driver, as cards are not accepted on board. The Málaga Transport Consortium publishes a winter timetable for 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027; do not assume a bus runs on the attraction’s fixed closure days.
Organised holiday excursions
A tour can be simpler without a car, especially over Christmas when trains and buses need extra checking; our guide to the trip from Málaga in winter compares the two. Make sure your exact date has a departure: the walk may be open on a day when a particular operator does not run. Check transport, admission, language, pickup and what happens if the route closes.
A practical 26 December day trip from Málaga
This outline assumes a confirmed morning entry and normal operation; it is not a live train or tour timetable.
Morning: have breakfast and leave Málaga early. Allow time to reach the car park or meeting point, take any shuttle and walk the approach path.
Late morning: go through admission and the safety briefing, collect your helmet and start walking through the Gaitanejo Gorge.
Midday: cross the open landscape of the Valle del Hoyo, then the steep southern Gaitanes Gorge and its suspension bridges. Take your time over photos, but do not block the narrow boardwalks.
Early afternoon: follow the exit path towards El Chorro. Have lunch if a local bar or restaurant is open, or take your shuttle, train or coach.
Late afternoon and evening: return to Málaga for the historic centre and the Christmas lights, then dinner. Check the city’s current Christmas programme for dates and shows, as they change from year to year.
What should you wear and pack?
At Christmas you need supportive hiking or trail shoes, comfortable trousers, a breathable top, a fleece and a hooded waterproof, windproof jacket. Heavy mountaineering gear is unnecessary for most visitors. Thin gloves help on a cold day.
Carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person, a small backpack, permitted snacks such as fruit, nuts or energy bars, a charged phone, your downloaded ticket and ID. There are no toilets or cafés on the controlled walkway. Large bags, umbrellas, trekking poles, selfie sticks and drones are not allowed. The attraction provides the helmet.
Children must be eight or older, with an adult and proof of age. Pushchairs are not allowed, and you need the fitness to walk for several hours. The exposed bridges can be hard going if you suffer from strong vertigo.
What happens if Christmas weather cancels the walk?
The operator can close the route for unsafe rain, wind or other hazards, sometimes on the day itself. Check the official website, your booking email and SMS, and the operator’s Telegram channel.
If you bought directly from the official site, the closure procedure lets you ask for a new available date or a refund of the admission fee after an official closure. You must apply within four calendar days of the closure notice. Deciding not to go because the forecast looks poor does not normally give you the same rights. Transport, hotel and tour bookings have their own terms.
A spare day matters more at Christmas, because the four holiday closures and the Monday closures leave fewer days to move to. If you cannot reschedule and the rain covers the whole region, Málaga’s museums and indoor sights make a good plan B; check their holiday opening hours first.
Before Christmas or after Christmas?
20–23 December: suits visitors who want to fit the walk in before the 24–25 December closures. Monday 21 December 2026 is normally closed; 22 and 23 December are ordinary operating days.
26–30 December: a popular holiday window. 26 and 27 December fall on a weekend, Monday 28 December is normally closed, and 29 and 30 December are ordinary operating days. After that, it comes down to which tickets are left and what the forecast says.
2–6 January: 2 and 3 January are a weekend, 4 January is a Monday, and 5 and 6 January are normally open, subject to the calendar and holiday transport. On 5 January Málaga holds its Three Kings’ celebrations.
No date guarantees smaller crowds or better weather. Pick a confirmed slot, reliable transport and as much room for the weather as your trip allows.

How cold or rainy will it be?
December averages on the coast are mild but fairly wet: an average high of 17.5 °C and 6.6 rainy days. Conditions in the gorge and the forecast for your day can differ.
Can I take the train on Boxing Day?
Only if trains and the shuttle run on that exact date. Check both directions before you book.
Is the new bridge included?
Yes, it is part of the route, used as staff direct. There is no premium bridge ticket.
Final verdict
Caminito del Rey can be the outdoor highlight of a Christmas holiday in Málaga. The gorge, the boardwalks and the bridges are a sharp contrast to the festive city streets. Book an operating date well ahead, take a morning or late-morning slot, watch the weather and keep the four holiday closures in mind. With a car, the €10 entry is hard to beat; without one, a tour with transport from Málaga saves you the train and shuttle connections.
